Etymology
Romanian borrowed "pompă" from French "pompe", the word for the mechanical device. The origin of the French and English word for the device is uncertain, likely imitative, and it spread across Dutch, German, French, and English in the late medieval period through seafaring and trade. Romanian also uses the same spelling for an unrelated sense, "pomp, ostentation," which comes from a different French "pompe" rooted in Latin "pompa" (procession) and Greek "pompē" (a sending, an escort). The two senses collided in form only after separate borrowings.
