Etymology
Polițist was formed in Romanian from poliție (police) plus the agent-noun suffix -ist, borrowed from French policier and the wider French -iste pattern. Poliție itself traces back through French police and Latin politia to Greek politeia, meaning citizenship or civil administration, from polis, the city-state. The word entered Romanian during the nineteenth century as the modern state built formal police institutions on French and German models.
