Etymology
Roșie is the feminine form of the adjective roșu, meaning red, from Latin russus. The noun use for tomato is a shortened form of the older phrase pătlăgea roșie, literally red eggplant, once used to distinguish tomatoes from the yellow eggplant (pătlăgea vânătă covers the purple kind, oddly enough the naming split by color). Over time speakers dropped pătlăgea and kept only roșie as the everyday word for the fruit.
