Etymology
Portofel entered Romanian as a borrowing from French portefeuille, a compound of porter (to carry) and feuille (leaf, sheet of paper). The French word originally meant a folder for carrying loose papers, and its meaning narrowed in Romanian to the small case people use for banknotes and cards. The ending was reshaped to fit Romanian spelling and pronunciation, which is why it no longer looks like a two-part word to Romanian speakers today.
