Etymology

Sărbătoare comes from Latin servare, to keep or observe, and originally meant a day set aside and kept as holy or as a day of rest. This sets Romanian apart from the other Romance languages, which built their word for holiday on Latin festa instead (French fête, Italian festa, Spanish fiesta). Sărbători is simply the plural, more than one such observed day. The middle syllables look Slavic but the root is Latin.
