Etymology
Romanian sidă was taken from the scientific Latin genus name Sida, applied by Carl Linnaeus in the 18th century to a group of mallow-family plants. Linnaeus in turn drew on Ancient Greek sídē, a name older botanical writers used for certain water plants. The word entered Romanian mainly through botanical and agricultural writing, not everyday speech, which is why it still sounds technical to most speakers.
