Etymology
Ticălos comes from the Slavic root tih-, meaning quiet or calm, the same root that gave Romanian tihnă (peace, calm). The word first meant poor, humble, or wretched in older Romanian, describing someone quietly downtrodden. Over time the sense hardened from pitiable to blameworthy, and today it names someone morally low, a scoundrel or villain.
