Etymology
Adopta entered Romanian in the 19th century as part of a large wave of French and Latin borrowings that modernized the language. It comes from Latin adoptare, formed from ad- (toward) and optare (to choose, wish). The word replaced or supplemented older, more colloquial ways of describing taking in a child, and later extended to abstract objects like laws and policies, following the same pattern as its French counterpart adopter.
