Partidă came into Romanian from French partie and Italian partita, both meaning "game" or "match." Those words go back to Latin partita, the feminine form of partitus, past participle of partiri, "to divide, to share out." The idea of dividing a contest into rounds, or dividing stakes among players, gave the word its later sense of a single game or match. A related borrowing, partid, kept a narrower sense and came to mean "political party."
