Etymology

Romanian borrowed "toast" from French, which had earlier taken it from English. English "toast" comes from Old French "toste," from Latin "tostare," a form of "torrere," meaning to roast or scorch. The drinking sense grew out of the old custom of putting spiced toasted bread in wine, and later of raising a glass while naming the person being honored.
