Etymology

Celălalt is a compound of the demonstrative article cel ("that, the one") and alalt, an old form of alt ("other"), itself from Latin alter. Romanian fused the two elements into a single agreeing word, a pattern unique among Romance languages. The result behaves like one word but still carries the gender and number endings of both an article and an adjective.
