Etymology

Romanian borrowed "turneu" from French "tournée," a round trip made by a group to perform or compete in several places. This happened during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, when French supplied much of modern Romanian's vocabulary for culture and sport. French "tournée" comes from the verb "tourner," to turn, which traces back to Latin "tornare," to shape on a lathe. The related French word "tournoi" (tournament) shares the same root, which explains why "turneu" in Romanian covers both a touring trip and a competitive tournament.
