Etymology
Romanian borrowed "conflict" from French "conflit" and Latin "conflictus" during the 19th-century modernization of the language, when many abstract and administrative terms were imported from Western Romance languages. The Latin source is the past participle of "confligere", built from "com-" (together) and "fligere" (to strike). The literal sense is a striking together, which later narrowed to disagreement or armed struggle.
