Uita comes from the Latin oblitare, a frequentative form built on oblivisci, meaning to forget. Centuries of sound change wore the word down, dropping the initial syllable and simplifying its consonants into the modern Romanian form. It is one of the core Latin-inherited verbs of Romanian, not a later borrowing from French or Italian.
