Etymology
The word comes from the Semitic triliteral root ḥ-l-l, whose base sense is to untie, loosen, or alight. The Form IV pattern (أَفْعَلَ) adds a causative meaning, so the root sense of loosening becomes the act of making something permitted. The logic is concrete: removing a restriction frees an action for use, much as untying a knot frees a rope.
