Etymology

تَصْوِيت is the verbal noun of the Form II verb صَوَّتَ, built on the triliteral root ص-و-ت, meaning voice or sound. The root itself is Semitic, not Indo-European, so it has no link to a Proto-Indo-European ancestor. The political sense, to cast a vote, grew naturally from the older sense of speaking or sounding out one's choice.
