Etymology
The verb comes from the Semitic root kh-j-l (خ-ج-ل), which carries the sense of shame or shyness. The base form khajila means to feel ashamed or bashful. Adding the causative hamza prefix produces akhjala, the Form IV pattern that turns an intransitive state into a transitive action: to cause someone else to feel that shame.
