Etymology
The word comes from the Semitic root ص-ب-ر (ṣ-b-r), whose base sense is to bind or hold something in place. From this physical sense of restraint grew the moral sense of holding oneself back from complaint, that is, patience. صَبُور is built on the فَعُول (fa'ūl) pattern, which marks intensive or habitual qualities, so it names someone who restrains himself to an unusual degree.
