Etymology
The word comes from the Arabic root kh-r-q, whose base verb kharaqa means to tear or punch a hole through something. The pattern af'al here is the same one used for physical and mental defects, so akhraq literally casts a person as one who tears or damages things through mishandling. Over time the sense widened from physical clumsiness to general ineptitude, including social awkwardness.
