أَخْرَس comes from the Arabic triliteral root خ-ر-س, which carries the sense of muteness and the inability to speak. It follows the pattern أَفْعَل, the template Arabic uses for physical defects and colors, as in أَعْمَى (blind) and أَحْمَر (red). The feminine form is خَرْسَاء and the plural is خُرْس.
