Etymology
أقام comes from the Semitic root q-w-m, meaning to stand or rise. It is the causative form (Form IV) of قام, so the literal sense is to make something stand: to set up, erect, or establish. From the idea of making oneself stand in a place came the meaning to reside or stay. The same root appears in Hebrew qūm and Geʿez qoma.
