The word derives from the Arabic triliteral root ʔ-s-r, which carries the sense of binding, tying, or holding together. An أُسْرَة is thus a group bound by ties of kinship. The same root gives the verb أَسَرَ, to capture or bind, and the noun أَسِير, a captive.
