إعدام is the verbal noun of the Form IV verb أَعْدَمَ, built on the Arabic root ع-د-م, which carries the sense of lack or nonexistence. The causative Form IV pattern turns 'nonexistence' into 'causing nonexistence,' and by the modern era the word settled into its main legal sense: putting a condemned person to death.
