Etymology
جافّ is the active participle of the hollow-geminate verb جَفَّ (jaffa), which means to dry up or lose moisture. The root ج-ف-ف is a native Semitic root built around the idea of moisture loss, and it appears throughout the Arabic verb system in forms describing drying and dehydration. Because Arabic belongs to the Semitic family rather than the Indo-European one, it has no Proto-Indo-European ancestor.
