Etymology

إلغاء is the verbal noun (maṣdar) of the Form IV verb أَلْغَى, meaning to render void or cancel. Both trace to the root ل-غ-و, whose core sense is emptiness, nullity, or meaningless speech. The Form IV pattern إفعال turns that root sense into a transitive causative action: to make something null. This is a native Semitic formation, not a borrowing.
