Etymology
بَيْنِيّ is built from the preposition بَيْن (bayn), meaning 'between' or 'among,' plus the nisba suffix ـِيّ that turns a noun into a relative adjective. The root b-y-n runs through classical Arabic with the sense of separation and distinctness, as in بَانَ 'to become clear' and بَيَّنَ 'to clarify.' The adjective itself is a modern formation, coined to render the English prefix 'inter-' in scientific and technical Arabic. It now appears across academic and diplomatic writing for ideas of in-betweenness and mutual relation.
