Etymology
تَعَرَّف is the Form V verb built on the Semitic triliteral root ع-ر-ف (ʿ-r-f), which carries the sense of knowing and recognizing. Form V adds the prefix تَـ to the Form II verb عَرَّفَ ('to make known, to introduce'), turning a causative into a reflexive: to bring knowledge to oneself, that is, to get to know. The same root yields مَعْرِفَة ('knowledge') and اِعْتَرَفَ ('to confess').
