Etymology
أَلْيَس comes from the Arabic root ل ي س, which carries the sense of courage. The noun اللَّيَس means bravery, and the verb لَيِسَ means to be brave. The word follows the أَفْعَل adjective pattern and is glossed in classical dictionaries as the brave man who will not flee from battle. The same three root letters also spell لَيْسَ, the verb of negation, but lexicographers treat the two as separate words.
