Etymology
جِهاز derives from the triliteral root ج-ه-ز, which carries the sense of preparing or fitting out. The related verb جَهَّزَ means to equip or outfit, as in readying a soldier's kit or a bride's trousseau. From this idea of assembled equipment, the noun came to mean any apparatus or device. In modern Arabic it is the ordinary word for an appliance, a machine, or an organized system such as the immune or digestive system.
