Etymology
The noun comes from the triliteral root ع-ق-ل. The base verb عَقَلَ first meant to tie or hobble a camel, then widened to mean to restrain oneself and to grasp with the mind. So عَقْل names the faculty that binds and holds steady: reason that checks impulse. The cord used to hobble a camel, عِقَال, comes from the same root.
