Etymology

تَقْرِيب is the verbal noun of the Form II verb قَرَّبَ, 'to bring near.' It is built on the triconsonantal root ق-ر-ب, which carries the sense of nearness and proximity. The word names the act of bringing one thing close to another, and from there the modern senses of approximation and estimation. The root is shared widely across the Semitic languages and has no Indo-European source.
