Etymology

تَعَلَّم is the Form V verb of the root ع-ل-م (ʿ-l-m), which carries the sense of knowing and marking. Form V (تَفَعَّل) is the reflexive of Form II عَلَّمَ, to teach, so the verb means roughly to bring knowledge to oneself. The same root gives عِلْم, knowledge, and عالِم, scholar.
