Etymology
Arabic زَوْج is an old loanword. It entered Arabic from Aramaic zūḡā, which had taken it from Greek ζεῦγος, meaning yoke or pair. The Greek word goes back to the Indo-European root for joining, the same source as Latin iugum and English yoke. From the idea of two things yoked together came the senses of spouse, pair, and even number.
