Etymology

فَتَى comes from the Semitic root f-t-y, which carries the sense of youth and freshness. The same root yields فَتَاة for a young woman and فُتُوَّة for youthful vigor and chivalry. The third root letter is weak and surfaces as the alif maqsura ى at the end of the singular.
