Etymology
تَفَهُّم is the verbal noun of the Form V verb تَفَهَّمَ, built from the triliteral Arabic root ف-ه-م (f-h-m), which carries the core sense of understanding or grasping. Form V adds a prefix and gemination to the base verb فَهِمَ (to understand), giving a reflexive or effortful nuance: to work at understanding, to take pains to grasp something, often with an emotional or empathetic dimension. This is native Semitic morphology, not a borrowing.
