Etymology
The word is onomatopoeic. It comes from the quadriliteral verb ضَوْضَأَ (ḍawḍaʾa), built on a reduplicated root that imitates a repeated clattering sound. Arabic uses this same reduplication pattern for other noise words, most notably غَوْغاء (uproar, rabble). Because Arabic is a Semitic language, it has no Indo-European root behind this term.
