Etymology
كالّ is the active participle of the geminate verb كَلَّ (kalla), built on the root ك-ل-ل. The verb covers two linked ideas: a blade or edge losing its sharpness, and a body or mind losing its energy. Classical poets applied it equally to swords, eyes, tongues, and spirits worn down by strain. The same root gives كَلال (kalāl, fatigue) and كَليل (kalīl), a close synonym.
