Etymology
تَيْس is a native Semitic word for an adult male goat, built on the triliteral root ت-ي-س. It has a direct cognate in Hebrew תַּיִשׂ (tayish), also meaning he-goat, which points to a shared term in the pastoral vocabulary of the two languages before they split. Classical Arabic later extended the root to a verb, تَيَّسَ, meaning to become stubborn or foolish, taking the goat as the model of obstinacy. No Proto-Indo-European root applies, since Arabic and Hebrew belong to the separate Semitic family.
