Etymology
Arabic جَوْز is a loanword from Persian, where a form such as گوز (gawz) or گردو (gerdu) denoted the walnut. It entered Arabic through trade and agricultural vocabulary in the early Islamic centuries. It is a homograph of the native Arabic root ج-و-ز found in جاز and جواز (to pass, to be permitted), but the two are historically unrelated; they only happen to share the same three consonants.
