Etymology

The word comes from the Semitic root ʿ-r-sh, which carries the basic sense of building a raised roof or canopy, as in a trellis or bower. From this idea of an elevated, covered structure, the meaning narrowed to the raised, canopied seat of a ruler, and then to the throne itself. The same root gives Arabic words for arbors and pergolas, structures that share the idea of a frame raised overhead.
