Etymology
حارَب comes from the Semitic root ح-ر-ب, which carries the core sense of war and violent conflict. The verb is built on the Form III pattern فاعَل, a template that often marks an action done toward or with another party. So حارَب means to engage another side in war, rather than simply to be at war. The same root gives Arabic its ordinary word for war, حَرْب.
