Etymology
The word comes from the Semitic root ج و ل (j-w-l), which carries the core sense of going around or circling. Arabic builds this verb on Form V (تَفَعَّل), a pattern that adds a reflexive and repetitive shade to the root meaning. So where the base root suggests a single circling motion, the Form V verb suggests doing it back and forth, which is why it settles into the sense of wandering or roaming rather than one fixed circuit.
