Etymology
مَتَع comes from the Semitic triliteral root m-t-ʿ, attested in Classical Arabic in two related senses: the sun or day climbing high in the sky, and taking delight in something. Both senses point to a single idea, a kind of fullness, whether of daylight or of satisfaction. The root produced a wide family of everyday words, including متاع (goods, provisions) and the far more common Form X verb استمتع (to enjoy oneself).
