Etymology

دِقَّة comes from the Semitic root د-ق-ق (d-q-q), which carries the sense of being fine, thin, or finely pounded. The verb دقّ originally meant to pound or crush something into small, fine pieces, and the noun دِقَّة abstracted that into fineness of detail, and by extension precision. Because Arabic descends from Proto-Semitic rather than Proto-Indo-European, it has no PIE root.
