Etymology
The word is a borrowing from European languages, most directly French and Italian "radio." That word is a shortening of "radiotelegraphy," built on Latin "radius," meaning ray or spoke. Arabic took the term whole during the twentieth century as broadcasting spread. It keeps its foreign form and does not derive from a native triliteral root.
