Etymology
The verb comes from the Arabic triliteral root و-ج-ه (w-j-h), which carries the sense of "face". It is built on Form II, the pattern faʿʿala, which doubles the middle consonant to add a causative meaning. So the literal idea is to make something face a direction, that is, to point or direct it.
