Etymology

رَقَصَ comes from the Semitic triliteral root ر-ق-ص, which carries the sense of leaping, skipping, and dancing. It is a native Arabic Form I verb, and its verbal noun رَقْص names the act of dancing. The root has no Indo-European source. Comparisons with the Hebrew and Aramaic skip-and-dance roots exist, but the final consonant differs, so the link is not clean and is left out here.
