Etymology

Arabic borrowed سِجِلّ from Latin sigillum, a small seal or a document under seal, probably through Byzantine Greek sigillion, a sealed imperial decree. The Quran uses the word for a written scroll (21:104). Arabic speakers later treated the consonants s-j-l as a native root and coined the verb سَجَّلَ, to register, and the noun تَسْجِيل, recording.
