أَثار is the Form IV (causative) verb built on the Semitic root ث-و-ر, which carries the sense of stirring, rising, and agitation. The same root yields ثَوْرة (revolution) and ثارَ (to revolt). It is a hollow verb: the middle و of the root surfaces as a long ā in the past tense and as ī in the present, يُثير.
