Etymology

عَيِّنة comes from the Semitic root ع-ي-ن (ʿ-y-n), which centers on the eye and, by extension, a source or the essence of a thing. A sample is the small portion one inspects to judge the whole, so the link to seeing is direct. The same root gives عَيْن, the word for eye and for a spring of water. It has no Indo-European source.
